Field trip to L'Hôtel de Ville

Jan 13, 2014

Today instead of having class at 9:30am, we met outside l'Hôtel de Ville (Paris City Hall). It's not so much a "City Hall" as it is a palace. In one of my previous posts I posted what it looks like from the outside, but I didn't have a chance to go inside. Well today I did. Both intensive classes had arranged for a tour of the inside so we could learn about its history.

The inside is even more beautiful than the outside -- it was incredible. We didn't get to see most of the building, however, because a lot of it is used as office and administrative space. But we did get to see a lot of common areas and reception halls.

After the tour was over, we went back outside and reentered l'Hôtel de Ville from a different point to see a free exhibit on photgraphy of Paris.

And once that was over, we took a tour around the area to learn about more buildings and landmarks. We didn't go inside any of these, but our professor brought us close to them and told us about their history.

Our field trip ended around 1:30pm and we had a 45 minute lunch break, so we returned to campus and ate at the RestoU (the French term for a campus dining hall). Although I enjoyed the field trip, 4 hours was enough for me. But unfortunately we had to go to the class room and work for 3 more hours. So it was about 6:30pm by the time I got home to my host mom's apartment. That was really rough. Luckily though, tomorrow will be just 4 hours of class and then I'll be free!

Here are some pictures of l'Hôtel de Ville and the other buildings/monuments:

An old fortress on the river Seine that used to protect Paris from raids:

For some reason, people put padlocks on this fence. I really want to know why! And I'm definitely going to leave one before I return home!

So many padlocks!
